“Thanks for coming. That was a great relief to Holly and I.” Tom shook my hand as we stood in the doorway, while Holly waved from further down the hallway then ran closer and blew me a kiss. She clasped her hands high in triumph. I grinned and gave a thumbs up. Then she ran away again. I had no doubt she was off to chat to her mother.

I’d sat with Tom, talked, and he’d allowed me to study his palm. The touch of skin to skin was partly what I had relied on. Nothing about him said he was possessed or in any other way connected to the paranormal or the activities of creatures. My Sight was waning, but it was still one hundred percent better than what I’d been capable of before.

Sarah had seemed both relieved and disappointed, though I couldn’t imagine why. She had asked me to do this as a paranormal investigator, and Tom had no signs of being involved in anything supernatural, whereas that corpse photo Holly had provided showed distinct paranormal involvement.

I pointed out that there was something suspicious about his previous fiancée’s death, but getting the police interested seemed improbable.

That there might be a monstrous serial killer out there, I kept to myself. It was unlikely they would ever need to know, or even that it was a large part of why I had decided Tom had nothing to do with the crimes. I didn’t exactly lie but I skirted the facts.

Tom was an accountant and up and coming at his firm, from what I’d been told. The gathering around the dining room table had been pleasant, once I’d absolved him of all involvement in the so-called suicide. Doing that with everyone looking on—brave. I had thought he would arrange to see me privately, or with Holly alone.

I decided to say so. I leaned in and said quietly, “You’re a brave man, taking on your mother-in-law.”

“Love lends one wings and armor.” He winked. “Not that I could leave this be. It was an accusation of murder, really.” His vaguely happy expression melted away and he sighed. “Not that I can ever forget that Gabby suicided. Having a MIL who thinks I made her do it is difficult.”

“It would be. I’m sorry.” Offering a sorry because he had a suspicious mother-in-law was possibly a social gaffe. This case was like walking on sharpened eggshells.

“I am…happy…now. Holly is everything to me.”

Were those tears welling in his eyes? I really should go.

“True. And yes, of course it does. The love thing,” I hastily added, trying not to confuse him.

I walked back to where Ash and Harrow waited, leaning against the fence near the property line and the front gate.

Tom’s words had sounded like prophecy: Love lends us wings and armor.

A funny thing happened on the walk back to them. I doubted my announcement. How had I come to that conclusion?

The days were whizzing by in an avalanche of people doing tragic stuff, unbridled sex with monsters
